### 第1段

After her husband had gone to work, Mrs. Richards sent her children to school and went upstairs to her bedroom. She was too excited to do any housework that morning, for in the evening she would be going to a fancy-dress party with her husband. She intended to dress up as a ghost and as she had made her costume the night before, she was impatient to try it on. Though the costume consisted only of a sheet, it was very effective. After putting it on, Mrs. Richards went downstairs. She wanted to find out whether it would be comfortable to wear.

中文理解：理查兹夫人等丈夫上班走后，把孩子送去上学，迫不及待地回到楼上自己的卧室。那天上午，她兴奋得什么家务活都不想做，因为晚上她要同丈夫一起参加一个化装舞会。她打算装扮成鬼的模样。头天晚上她已把化装服准备好，这时她已经等不及想试穿了。尽管化装服仅由一个被单制成，却十分逼真。理查兹夫人穿上化装服后下了楼，想试试穿起来是否舒服。

* **find out**：查明；弄清；用于发现信息或原因；寻找具体物品通常用 look for。

* **whether**：不仅 / 两者都不 / 是否；找齐成对结构的两端；不是看见 not only 就一律倒装。

#### 这一段的读法与用法

注释：①too…to 通常表示“太……而不能……”，本句是兴奋得做不下家务。有些带愿意、乐意等含义的形容词可构成肯定表达，例如 only too happy to help 是“非常乐意帮忙”；不能仅凭 too 前出现 all/but/only，就认定整个结构变成肯定。② intended = planned = mean to。③头天晚上的表达不等于昨晚(last night)，同理，去年 (last year)也不等于上一年(the previous year)。④impatient = eager = can't wait = anxious = hungry = thirsty = desperate。⑤try it on = put it on to see what it was like。⑥consisted of = be made up of = be composed of。⑦whether = if。

\[语法符号讲解] \[1]本句为动词不定式短语to find out 作宾语，该宾语本身又带有一个whether 引导的宾语从句，这里予以细分。

### 第2段

Just as Mrs. Richards was entering the dinning room, there was a knock on the front door. She knew that it must be the baker. She had told him to come straight in if ever she failed to open the door and to leave the bread on the kitchen table. Not wanting to frighten the poor man, Mrs. Richards quickly hid in the small storeroom under the stairs. She heard the front door open and heavy footsteps in the hall. Suddenly the door of the storeroom was opened and a man entered. Mrs. Richards realized that it must be the man from the Electricity Board who had come to read the metre. She tried to explain the situation, saying "It's only me", but it was too late. The man let out a cry and jumped back several paces. When Mrs. Richards walked towards him, he fled, slamming the door behind him.

中文理解：理查兹夫人刚刚走进餐厅，前门就传来敲门声。她知道来的一定是面包师。她告诉过面包师，如果她不去开门，他就直接进门，把面包放在厨房的桌上即可。理查兹夫人不想吓唬这个无辜的人，便赶紧躲到了楼梯下的小储藏室里。她听见前门的打开声，门厅里响起沉重的脚步声。突然，储藏室的门被打开了，一个男人走了进来。理查兹夫人这才意识到一定是供电局来人查电表了。她试着解释，说：“是我呀！”可是已经来不及了。那人大叫一声，往后退了好几步。理查兹夫人朝他走去，只见他“砰”的一声关上门逃跑了。

* **failed to**：未能做到；可以客观交代未完成的事，不必总理解为能力不足。

注释：①if ever 表条件句，任何时候、任何场合。②failed to = didn't(do sth. you were normally expected to do)。③not wanting 是分词否定结构作原因状语。 ④slamming = banging。⑤fled = ran away，而escape 侧重逃脱、摆脱。

#### Summary 摘要

Mrs. Richards had dressed up as a ghost and was just going into the dining room when there was a knock on the door. Thinking it was the baker, she hid in the storeroom under the stairs. She heard footsteps in the hall and then the man from the Electricity Board opened the storeroom door. Though she said "It's only me", he got a bad fright. When she walked towards him, he fled, slamming the front door behind him. (79 words)

#### Composition 作文

Mrs. Richards immediately went upstairs and took off(脱下) her costume. She felt sorry for the poor man from the Electricity Board, but at the same time she was rather amused. Suddenly, there was a knock at the front door and Mrs. Richards opened it at once. The electricity man had returned, accompanied by a policeman, so she invited both in. The man told Mrs. Richards that he had tried to read her metre and that there was a ghost in the storeroom. Though Mrs. Richards explained that she had dressed up as a ghost, he refused to believe her. She told him to open the storeroom door, but he was too frightened, so she opened it herself. While the electricity man and the policeman were looking for the ghost in the storeroom, Mrs. Richards fetched(v.取来) her costume. She showed it to both men and only then did they(only 开头的部分倒装) believe her. (150 words)
