Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired. The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.

* **managed to**：设法成功做到；不仅是尝试，还包含最终做到了；try to 不保证成功。

* **used to**：过去常常 / 习惯于；used to do 说过去习惯；be used to 后说已习惯的事，别混用。

* **day and night**：发信号或消息 / 在……结束时 / 日夜；at the end of 明确某个末尾；in the end 总结最终结果。

* **ever since**：到目前为止 / 从那时起；它们常与完成时一起出现；回到原句看动作还是状态延续。

②vicar = priest，clergy，pastor，牧师。 ③repaired = fixed。④used to do，过去常常，区别be/get used to +n./doing，习惯。

One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours! Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped. Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on. In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.

* **woke up**：醒来 / 熟睡 / 摆好 / 返程；fast asleep 的 fast 强调熟睡，不是睡得快。

* **Looking at**：期待 / 照顾 / 寻找 / 看；介词一变意思就变；look forward to 的 to 后接名词或 -ing。

* **caught sight of**：瞥见；看见；适合叙事中写突然看到的人或东西。

注释：①with a start = in surprise，惊跳、惊奇。②the clock was striking the hours！ ③caught sight of = saw。

"Whatever are you doing up here Bill?" asked the vicar in surprise. "I'm trying to repair the bell,"answered Bill."I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise." "You certainly did give me a surprise!" said the vicar. "You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again." "That's the trouble, vicar," answered Bill."It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it." "We'll get used to that, Bill," said the vicar. "Thirteen is not as good as one, but it's better than nothing. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea."

* **in surprise**：匆忙地 / 绝望地 / 惊讶地 / 默默地 / 徒劳地；把短语连同动作一起记，观察它如何补出人物状态。

* **a surprise**：意外 / 在某岁时 / 贫困中；结合原句看 surprise 是感受还是意外的事，年龄用 at。

* **woken up**：醒来 / 熟睡 / 摆好 / 返程；fast asleep 的 fast 强调熟睡，不是睡得快。

* **used to**：过去常常 / 习惯于；used to do 说过去习惯；be used to 后说已习惯的事，别混用。

③to give you a surprise. Give you a surprise = give a surprise to you，一般间接宾语放在直接宾语前，而直接宾语放到间接宾语前需要加to，类似词bring, give, show, send, pass, tell。

#### Summary 摘要

However, the vicar was pleased the bell was working and offered the grocer a cup of tea. (79 words)

\[1]We were used to hearing our church bell striking the hours in our small village. For as long as anyone could remember, the bell had struck the hours day and night. However, one night the church bell remained silent and the next morning we saw that the clock had stopped at exactly one a.m. Our clock was clearly damaged, but no one could explain how this had happened.

\[2]Armed with a torch, our vicar climbed into the church tower to see what was going on. He heard a loud buzz as he went towards the clock and in the torchlight he found it had been invaded by bees. He was lucky they didn't sting him! He shone(shine 的过去式) his torch into the great bell and saw that it was full of wax and honey. No wonder it wasn't working!

\[3]A bee keeper was called in(召来) to deal with the situation. He immediately removed the queen bee to one of his bee hives and the other bees followed. The clock was cleaned and was soon working again. We not only enjoyed hearing it strike the hours day and night, but we enjoyed eating the honey as well. (195 words)
