The following day, the patient asked for a bedside telephone. When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington. When the doctor answered the phone, Mr. Gilbert said he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr. John Gilbert. He asked if Mr. Gilbert's operation had been successful and the doctor told him that it had been. He then asked when Mr. Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor told him that he would have to stay in hospital for another two weeks. Then Dr. Millington asked the caller if he was a relative of the patient. While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell… but the doctor refused to do so. 并列复合句，but 连接前后两句，前句为复合句，主句为主谓宾 + 宾补结构，句首是while 引导的时间状语从句，主系表结构；but 后句为主谓宾结构. 其中宾补较长，我们可以额外细分to tell him whether…是tell 接的双宾语，其中直接宾语由whether 引导的从句担任，我们在课文中予以了标记. #### 2. the patient asked for a telephone. 简单句，主谓宾结构. #### 3. When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington. 复合句，主句为并列句，均为主谓宾结构；句首是when 引导的时间状语从句，主系表结构. \[关键句型] 本课复习直接引语和间接引语，本句用 he asked for Doctor Millington 叙述他要求接通某位医生，并没有转述一个具体问句；不能仅因出现 asked 就一律称为间接引语。 #### 4. When the doctor answered the phone, Mr. Gilbert said he was inquiring… 复合句，主句主谓 + 宾语从句结构，该宾语从句为主谓结构，省略了that；句首是when 引导的时间状语从句，主谓宾结构. \[关键句型] Mr. Gilbert said…为间接引语. #### 5. He asked if… and the doctor told him that… 并列复合句，and 连接前后两句，前句为主谓 + if 引导的宾语从句结构，该从句为主系表结构；后句为主谓宾 + that 引导的宾语从句结构，该从句 it had been 省略了前面已出现的表语 successful，仍承接主系表结构。 \[关键句型] he asked…以及the doctor told him that…均为间接引语. #### 6. He asked when… and the doctor told him that… 并列复合句，and 连接前后两句，本句跟上一句非常像，前句为主谓 + when 引导的宾语从句结构，不是时间状语从句，这个需要留意，该宾语从句为主谓 + 主补结构. 后句同样含 told him that 引出的内容从句，但这里从句 he would have to stay in hospital 是主谓结构，与上句省略 successful 的主系表结构并不相同。 #### 7.
