They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand! 中文理解：飞机晚点了，侦探们已在机场等了整整一上午。他们正等着一个从南非运来的贵重包裹，里面装着钻石。数小时以前，有人向警方报告，说有贼人企图偷走这些钻石。当飞机抵达时，部分侦探等候在主楼内，另一些侦探则守候在停机坪上。 有两个人把包裹拿下飞机，运进了海关办公室。这时两个侦探把住门口，另外两个侦探打开了包裹。令他们吃惊的是，价值不菲的包裹里面装满了石头和沙子！ * **keeping guard**：看守 / 维持秩序 / 令人惊讶的是；前两种说人的职责，第三种说明人物反应。 * **full of**：装满 / 在某人看来；filled with 与 full of 的搭配要配对记，别混成 full with。 #### 1. The plane was late and detectives were waiting… 并列句，以and 分为前后两句，第一句为主系表结构，第二句为主谓结构. \[关键句型] 本课学习过去进行时，后句的谓语were waiting 就是过去进行时. #### 2. They were expecting a parcel… 简单句，主谓宾结构，也是用的过去进行时. 句末from South Africa 作定语，修饰 parcel，表示这是一个来自南非的包裹. 南非是非洲南部的一个国家，并非泛指非洲南部，如果想表达非洲南部，则可用(southern) Africa，southern 作定语修饰非洲. #### 3. someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal… 复合句，本句是全书第一个复合句，所谓复合句，是从句子结构的角度来对句子进行分类，可以分为简单句、并列句、复合句和并列的复合句四类. 复合句指除了主句之外，还有从句，融合在一整句中. 大家学到《新概念英语4》时，会遇到大量复合句. 本句中，主句是 tell sb. sth. 的双宾语结构：the police 是间接宾语，that thieves would try to steal the diamonds 是直接宾语从句，说明告知的内容。即 someone had told the police + that…一般来说，that 引导的宾语从句that 不作任何成分，只是作为引导词，口语中可以省略. \[语法符号讲解] 在引导词that 处画横线，但没有画满，仅画了“th”两个字母，代表宾语从句从此开始，在宾语从句末尾词the diamonds.处，在“nds.”下画横线，横线包括句末点句号，表示该横线是宾语从句，而非仅仅是宾语. 该从句中thieves 主语，照常画双横线；谓语would try，波浪线；动词不定式短语作宾语，“to steal the dia”下画横线，代表宾语. 这样diamonds 一词的宾语横线中间空了几个字母没有画线，可以有效区分宾语符号和宾语从句符号. #### 4. When the plane arrived, detectives were waiting… while others were waiting… 复合句，句首为when 引导的时间状语从句，为主谓结构. 主句detectives were waiting 为主谓结构，用了过去进行时. 后面的 while 表示两组侦探的情况对照，可理解为“而”；前面的 when 从句交代共同的时间背景。while 后也是主谓结构，用过去进行时。 \[语法符号讲解] when…arrived 为时间状语从句，故中括号“\[]”的“]”打在逗号右边“,]”，代表该中括号不是状语符号，而是状语从句符号. 同样的，while…airfield 也是如此，一个“]”打在点句号左边，代表地点状语，即“airfield].”，另一个“]” 打在点句号右边，代表状语从句的结尾，即“airfield.]”. #### 5. Two men took the parcel…and carried it… 并列句，两句都是主谓宾结构，其中后句省略了主语. #### 6.
